I fell in love with Western because of the trees! I had already been accepted at Western and Eastern Michigan University. I visited Eastern and I liked the campus but it was something about it that I did not like. So a few weeks later my mother and I got on the road and headed to Western. When we finally arrived it was a bright sunny day and I was very anxious to explore Westerns campus. When we started off on the tour I could not help but notice all of the beautiful scenery. I love nature because I feel that we are all directly connected to it; when I am surrounded by trees I feel relaxed. From my freshmen to Junior years of college I walked everywhere even when it was snowing in the dead of winter.
Since the beginning of college I have come in contact with people from all walks of life. The experiences I have gone through while in college have made me the person I am today. My freshmen year of college I went through one experience in particular that took me completely off guard. I stayed on fourth floor Harvey Hall with my roommate Taylor, and I had two suite mates. My suite mates turned out to be racist. One day after class I was ready to wind down; I proceeded to do my regular scheduled routine. I turned on my music while Taylor sat at her desk and we talked as I prepared for my shower. As I walked into the bathroom I noticed my towel was not folded in its proper way. I have always been a control/neat freak therefore when my personal items are out of place I know they have been tampered with. I said to Taylor "did u happen to touch my towel", she said "no Dani why would I touch your towel." So I grabbed my towel and opened it up and there was a huge brown dirty circle of who knows what all over it. So of course I was steaming. I went back in my room and showed Taylor; she tried to calm me down but it did not work. I went to my suite mates door and knocked but they would not answer. Once I calmed down I went to my R.A. and told her what happened. A few days later, my roommate went on facebook to see our suite mates using racial slurs and talking about us. At this point in my life I realized that all people were not raised how I had been raised which was to accept peoples differences. Before everything was all over Taylors' mother, and my mother were here speaking with residence life. About a week later we were allowed to move into an upper class dormitory with our own rooms. The whole situation made my outlook on people change for a long time. I went through a period of believing that all if not most white people were racist (besides the ones in my family). But life teaches you different lessons and I came to realize that just because two people were ignorant and closed minded not all Caucasian people are this way. Another major influence that helped me get through that situation was my faith in God. It allowed me to forgive my suite mates and move forward with life.
College is more than just going to class.College is embarking on new situations, meeting people from all walks of life and learning from them. College is an experience that you cannot receive anywhere else; the things I have learned while being at Western will stay with me for a lifetime.
